Gender-Neutral Trends in Fashion Wear

Gender-Neutral Trends in Fashion Wear

Fashion trends are forever changing. What looked great yesterday may be out of touch now and what was once obsolete or considered uncool can now be rocking! Such is the case for colours in the fashion and apparel industry.

The 80’s fashion era saw a surge and upward trend in bright colours such as blues, pinks, neons, and hues with strong colour contrasts, stripes, pastel colours, and the unforgettable rise of metallics. Clothing and makeup trends in that decade were bold, loud, and proud exuding eccentricness and a flair of rebellion. To compliment that, trends in makeup and hairstyle were also complimenting that style. Big puffed-up hairstyles and hairdos and bright makeup consisting of blue shadows and glimmering metallic lips completed the look.

In the 90s and early 2000s, the bright bold colours and eccentricity in the wardrobe were swapped for a more calmer and refined sense of style. Earthy tones of yellow, brown, rust and olive green emerged while black was classically used as a staple in pants and jacket wear. Denim was a dominant choice in upper wear and lower wear with all ages and both with men and women and accessories were added as a focus point popularly known as “the statement piece”. The choice of makeup was toned down to light and dark shimmery shades of browns, golds, and icy metallic pastels for lips and eyes.

Fast forward to the post-pandemic era, fashion is still evolving and making way to be more fluid and less differentiating between genders. Neutral tones and the craze of minimalism have proven to be very popular among today’s youth. Neutra ones and hues of white, beige, and grey are widely popular next to black. Vibrant colours are also used in pieces making to stand as a focal point along with nostalgic and retro hues such as burnt coral and orange, vivacious purples, and retro pop culture images and references can be seen in clothing and styles of shoewear. Yoga wear, leggings, and flared denim styles are seen in full swing while makeup styles vary from minimalism via a no makeup look, unique self-driven choice of colours and product intensity to a full coverage face sporting an extensive makeup wear regimen.

In addition, inclusivity and gender fluidity are widely seen in fashion with a noticeable shift going toward gender-neutral clothing in soft and neutral colours such as white, brown, beige, and black made to erase the lines of masculinity and feminity and embrace inclusivity. Men's and women’s styles and colours can be seen crossed over and combined offering the same choices of style, fit, and colours
